How Do You Compete?

Execution.  Can your organization operate long term in the manner in which it is currently operating?  When asking the question ‘How’, it must be understood that the answer should come in the description of your business model.  How do you create, deliver and capture value?  And is it sustainable?

In his book Business Model Generation, Alexander Osterwalder did a fantastic job designing what he calls the business model canvas.  This canvas is comprised of the 9 key components that comprise the go to market model of any organization.  They are as follows:

  • Customer Segments
  • Value Proposition(s)
  • Distribution Channels
  • Customer Relationships
  • Revenues
  • Key Resources
  • Key Activities
  • Strategic Partners
  • Cost Structure

Each of these components integrated into one business model should provide you with a tactical advantage in some way over your competition.  Well conceived and carefully articulated, your business model should define how you compete and ensure that the organization can sustain itself over time.
